It’s official! There’s a new Netflix series coming to Canton, starring Jason Bateman!

It’s no secret that Atlanta has become a very popular place for Hollywood to film movies and TV shows, and Cherokee County in particular has seen a ton of activity lately. Now there’s a brand new Netflix series coming to Canton!
Netflix has bought that little restaurant right on the banks of Lake Allatoona that was most recently called Mambo on the Lake and was known as the Little River Grill prior to that. I always meant to go there and never got around to it. Every time I drove down Bells Ferry Road I’d say, “That place looks like so much fun! We need to go have cocktails on the deck overlooking the lake there sometime.” Looks like I have missed my opportunity to eat there but maybe now I can go watch when they film a scene there! Hey, I have an acting background. I can always be “tall girl in back” in a crowd scene, right?
This is the Little River Grill that was recently bought by Netflix.
The series is called Ozark and is going to be about the seedy world of drug money laundering. Jason Bateman is not only starring, he’s directing this series and acting as an executive producer, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Evidently Ozark follows the life of a flawed family man as he moves to Lake of the Ozarks after getting in trouble with a Mexican drug cartel. Bateman’s character sets up a new drug ring in tourist destination Lake of the Ozarks to earn enough money to pay off the head of the drug ring in order to save his own skin.
It will be produced by the same people that did House of Cards, another absolutely brilliant (and terrifying if it’s even remotely accurate) Netflix series. I’m super excited about this! I think Jason Bateman is a comic genius. His deadpan delivery just kills me. If you’re not familiar with his name, he starred in Arrested Development, Horrible Bosses, and Identity Thief (which made me want to cry, I felt so bad for him!) Identity Thief was also filmed in Atlanta-wood. (I just made that up!)
Hollwood Reporter states, “Ozark follows MRC’s model of going straight to series and shopping the project as a completed package. The company’s credits include House of Cards — which put Netflix on the map with scripted originals — and Starz’s Patrick Stewart-Seth MacFarlane comedy Blunt Talk as well as the premium cabler’s upcoming The One Percent and Counterpart.”
Rumor has it that they’ve been scouting locations around the county for places to film. Jason Bateman was spotted at an Atlanta Braves game last week during some down time while renovations are being made to the former Little River Grill.
You can see that it’s right on the lake, so I’m guessing this is going to be important in the show’s plot.
Ozark is set in Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri but we will have bragging rights that it’s actually filmed here. According to Deadline.com filming was slated to begin this past Spring. No word yet on whether that has started or not. The original plan was to shoot in Vancouver and NY but I’m guessing Vancouver is now off the table since the purchase of the Little River Grill.
