How to Survive Summer in the South!

Living in the South means enjoying plenty of warm weather, but it also means preparing for intense summer heat and humidity. Whether you're moving to Georgia, South Carolina, or another Southern state, a few simple habits can make the hottest months more manageable.

Here are some practical ways to stay comfortable during a Southern summer.

Take a Bath

A refreshing bath or shower can help you cool off after spending time outdoors. Using comfortably cool water and allowing your hair to air-dry can make the relief last longer.

Use Antiperspirant

Sweating is part of life in a humid climate. Antiperspirants can help reduce underarm perspiration, while deodorants mainly address odor. Depending on the product, applying antiperspirant at night may improve its effectiveness. Follow the directions on the label.

Double the Fans!

Fans can make an air-conditioned room feel more comfortable by circulating air. During warmer months, a ceiling fan set to rotate counterclockwise generally creates a downward breeze.

Remember that fans cool people rather than lowering room temperatures. Turn them off when nobody is using the room. During extreme heat, fans alone may not provide enough protection, so seek an air-conditioned space when necessary.

Drink Lots of Water

Hydration becomes especially important when hot, humid conditions cause you to sweat more. Drink water regularly throughout the day, particularly when exercising or working outdoors.

Foods such as bananas and dates provide nutrients including potassium, while coconut water is another beverage option. Water remains an excellent everyday choice, and sugary drinks are not always necessary.

Wear Loose Clothing

Lightweight, breathable clothing can make Southern summers more comfortable. Loose-fitting garments and light colors can help reduce heat buildup, while breathable footwear may be more pleasant than heavy shoes on humid days.

Block the Sun

Keep direct sunlight from heating your home by closing curtains or blinds on sunny windows. When outdoors, take advantage of shade from trees, covered areas, and awnings.

Don't forget sunscreen! Sun protection is an important part of spending time outside during summer.

Are You Ready???

Staying hydrated, choosing suitable clothing, finding shade, and planning outdoor activities for cooler parts of the day can help make summer in the South more enjoyable.

With a little preparation, you can appreciate everything Southern living has to offer while staying safer and more comfortable in the heat.
