Success!
Springfield is the county seat of Effingham County, about 26 miles from downtown Savannah. It’s been around since 1799, so it’s had plenty of time to perfect the small-town thing. Think friendly faces at the post office, Friday night football and a downtown that’s having a real moment right now.
For a while, Springfield’s main drag got a little quiet. When Highway 21 was widened, traffic started going around town instead of through it, and a lot of storefronts on Laurel Street ended up empty. And the ones that remained were all the same - antique stores. Then the town got to work. Springfield set up a Downtown Development Authority in 2016, and since then Laurel Street has filled back up with charming local restaurants, shops, and event spaces. Old brick buildings have been renovated instead of torn down, and the historic Mars Theatre has been restored. I live in Springfield so I may be biased, but I love our little town!
You’ll find a mix of older homes near downtown and newer neighborhoods on the edges of town, often with more space for your money than closer to Savannah. Springfield is part of the Effingham County School District. Highways 21 and 119 make it easy to get to Rincon, Guyton, Pooler and Savannah.
